Embodied: Boat Builder Guided Talk Series

Saturday 10 October·14:00 – 15:00

Windermere Jetty Museum - Stories of boats and steam

Rayrigg Road, Windermere, LA23 1BN

Explore the story behind building Txispa, the Windermere Skiff on show in Embodied: The Making of a Windermere Skiff, from the perspective of boatbuilder Line Packer, who brought the project to life. Across the 5 guided talks, Line will take you through the process of building a traditional Windermere Skiff, sharing the skills, materials and decisions involved at each stage. From drawing the initial plans to considering the final rowing experience, discover how a boat develops from an idea into a finished vessel. Breakdown of what you’ll learn during each session: Session 1: Lofting Discover how a boatbuilder plans out a vessel in 2D and translates it into a 3D object. Session 2: The wood Explore what makes good boatbuilding timber, how the right wood is selected and Line’s experience connecting with local foresters to source material. Session 3: Clinker-building Learn about the history of clinker-building, the traditional technique used to build the Windermere Skiff, and how this has been used in this project. Session 4: Creating the curves Gain insight into how ribs and feet-outs help create the curves of the boat, and how materials and techniques influence its final form. Session 5: The rowing experience Delve into the ergonomic experience and decisions involved in adapting a vessel while celebrating its original heritage, curves and lines. During each talk, you’ll have the chance to ask Line questions. You’re welcome to attend an individual session or the complete 5-part series. The talks move chronologically through the boatbuilding process, so attending all sessions will give you the full picture of what it takes to build a boat. Although the Boat Builder Guided Talk Series are included with museum admission, we kindly ask that you reserve your place in advance. A valid Windermere Jetty Museum admission ticket is still required to take part.
