Summer Art Club: Drawing with Lela

oin local artist Lela Harris this summer for a weekly drawing workshop series designed especially for young artists aged 8 – 14. Taking inspiration from Harris’ work in Familial Traces, these relaxed, hands-on sessions will help participants build confidence, try new materials and develop their own creative ideas. Across the series, young artists will explore pencil, charcoal and colour while creating portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Each session offers the chance to learn new drawing techniques, look closely at artworks on display throughout the gallery and respond creatively to themes of identity, family, belonging and home. In the final workshop, participants will use their favourite materials and techniques from the series to create a collaborative artwork together. Sessions can be booked individually, but we recommend attending the full series to get the most out of the programme and build skills week by week. All materials are provided, though participants are welcome to bring their favourite sketchbook if they would like. Parent or guardian supervision is required for each session. Tickets include entry to Abbot Hall’s collection galleries and exhibitions on the day of the workshop. Sessions run on Wednesdays throughout August, 10:30am–12:30pm. Drawing For Absolute Beginners

Creating art has a positive effect on our wellbeing yet sometimes it is hard to know where to start. On this course you will learn to reconnect with drawing through a series of enjoyable exercises designed to develop skills translating what we see onto paper. With expert guidance, tutor demonstrations and within a supportive and social setting, you will be able to achieve drawings that you are proud of. Through a series of drawing tasks, you will learn to: Explore different drawing techniques using pencil/graphite, charcoal and ink pens. Connect with your observation of a subject matter through some enjoyable tasks. These will increase your skills within the discipline of drawing. Appreciate elements that make up a good drawn composition through the practical application of observation, and different processes and techniques. Appreciate some different approaches to, and styles of, drawing by looking at artists’ work. Different methods of teaching and learning will include practical work, demonstrations, group discussion, one–to-one advice and guidance, looking at work by other artists, and peer learning. What do I need to bring with me? A3 sketchbook of white cartridge paper. Graphite pencils An ink pen such as a fine liner or marker pen. Willow charcoal and putty rubber. Cheap hairspray or artist’s fixative. (Optional) Other drawing materials like charcoal pencils, compressed charcoal sticks or conte sticks.

Abstract Watercolour Landscapes

Discover the basics of watercolour painting through loose landscape subjects. Explore equipment, tools, painting techniques and layering in a series of practical tasks, building skills and confidence with watercolours. What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught? In this workshop you will learn the basic techniques of watercolour painting through a series of fun, practical exercises using loose landscapes as inspiration. You will explore equipment, brushes, colour mixing, colour palettes, layering and expressive mark-making through demonstrations, guided activities and examples from other artists. Drawing on the techniques and confidence gained throughout the session; you will be supported to create your own finished landscape painting/s. This course will be taught through a series of demonstrations and practical watercolour painting activities. Looking at other artists paintings, the work of peers, and having one-to-one time with the tutor will facilitate your individual learning to enable you to achieve on this course. What do I need to bring? Drawing boards and easels will be provided. All painting materials need to be provided by the students. Please bring: Watercolour paper (NOT or Rough surface is recommended). At least one large A2 sheet (it will be okay to attach smaller sheets together). Plus some smaller sheets. Watercolour Paints (preferably good quality (student quality like Cotman is good). Watercolour brushes – at least one round brush No.8, 10 or 12 in size A larger mop style brush would also be useful but not necessary. Water pots. Kitchen roll. Palette or plate for mixing colours on. Salt, clingfilm, sponge (optional extras) Photos of landscapes/seasons that inspire you (digital or photos). Hairdryer will be useful. Masking Tape. NB – if purchasing art materials at Youdells access a 10% discount. Say that you are attending an Art Class at the Brewery. When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to bring an apron and/or dress for mess. Are there any additional costs? About the tutor Catherine MacDiarmid brings over 30 years of teaching experience to her role, combining extensive classroom practice with the insight of a dedicated, practising artist. She has exhibited widely, including the BP Portrait Award (2001/02), the New Light Art (2021/22 and 2023/24), and regularly at the Mall Galleries. Her work has received numerous accolades, most recently the Watercolour Materials Award at the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2023 and the People and Faces Award 2025 at the Lake Artists Society. She is an elected member of the Lakes Artists Society and the Contemporary British Portrait Painters. Catherine has also appeared on Portrait Artist of the Year (2014 and 2018), reaching the semi-finals in 2019.Alongside private portrait commissions, her work is collected internationally, and she is based in her home studio in Kendal.
Flowing from the Fells

Flowing from the Fells presents selected works from the Lakeland Arts collection to explore the rivers and streams that make up the landscape of the region, as well as our connections to them and local stories rooted in them. The exhibition will bring modern and classic works into dialogue. With the support of the Contemporary Art Society, it will also feature a newly-commissioned artwork by Jessica Warboys, responding to the Duddon River and the landscape of west Cumbria.

Rachel will share practical tips, tricks and industry knowledge gained through years of designing and producing bespoke lampshades and textiles. By the end of the session, participants will have completed a beautiful handmade lampshade and gained the confidence and skills to continue making lampshades at home. Trained by the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) , she previously taught upholstery and lampshade making at the Brewery Arts Centre. Rachel is also the Creative Director of Cable & Blake , where she has pioneered the creation of sustainable Herdwick wool tweeds inspired by the Lake District. Passionate about traditional craftsmanship, she loves sharing her skills and helping others create beautiful upholstered furniture and bespoke lampshades in relaxed, supportive workshops suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike.

Join us for a festive family printmaking workshop! Make your own handmade Christmas wrapping paper using lino and other block printing techniques. Explore patterns, colour and design while creating beautiful papers perfect for wrapping gifts. What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught? This fun and festive family workshop will firstly introduce participants to the basics of lino and block printing. Working together, adults and children will learn how to create simple designs inspired by Christmas themes, patterns and seasonal imagery. Participants will explore mark-making, colour, repetition and composition before printing their designs onto large sheets of paper to create unique handmade wrapping paper. The workshop will be taught through step-by-step demonstrations, practical activities and individual guidance, making it altogether accessible for complete beginners. Children and adults will be encouraged to experiment, share ideas and also develop their own creative designs in a relaxed and supportive environment. She is now part of our Creative Learning team at Brewery Arts, overseeing the Exhibitions and Youth Visual Arts programmes as well as teaching visual art classes for both young people and adults. Helena enjoys an exploratory approach to creativity, focusing on experimentation with different media, techniques and ideas, and also believes in the importance of play.
